Battle Staff Training (BST) activities at NFIU Romania
Bucharest, Romania. NATO Force Integration Unit Romania (NFIU ROU) has concluded the Battle Staff Training (BST) regarding the participation in the Saber Guardian 19 (SG 19) exercise. For the duration of an entire week, the NFIU ROU headquarters conducted a series of training activities which included mission order reception, the exercise concept and scenario presentation, training of the NFIU ROU staff along with the augmentees in order to accomplish specific tasks and rehearsing the mission before proper action during the exercise.
During SG 19, NFIU ROU will act as a facilitator to the entire Reception, Staging and Onward Movement (RSOM) process of the participating troops, thus conveying a better visibility of the transit of forces on the territory of Romania. After these troops will train on the territory of Romania, NFIU ROU will also act as a facilitator in the process in which the troops redeploy to their home bases.
SG 19 is a multinational exercise led by Romanian Land Forces Headquarters and United States Army Europe Headquarters (USAREUR), which is conducted on the territories of Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, between the 3th and 24th of June 2019. In Romania, there are approximately 13.500 troops participating in this exercise, out of which 5900 troops belong to allied and partner states.
NFIU ROU has taken part in the planning process of exercise SG 19 since its initial phases. At this moment, the headquarters is ready to execute its facilitating role towards the deployment of troops participating in this exercise and rehearsing relationships with the host nation. SG 19 offers the possibility of testing and exersing logistics planning capabilities and coordination with the higher echelon, the Headquarters Multinational Division South-East – HQ MND-SE, along with the same type of NFIU headquarters from Bulgaria and Hungary and with Romania as host nation, on the territory of which these troops will be executing movements, will integrate and train in common with the allies and partners.
In 2019, NFIU ROU begun the headquarters’ recertification process for the first time since it was founded in 2015. The recertification is, according to NATO procedures, a national responsibility.
The evaluation for recertificating NFIU ROU is conducted by a group of 18 evaluators from HQ MND-SE, under the coordination of host nation represented by the Romanian Joint Forces Command.
The recertification of NFIU ROU is a process which consists of 3 phases. Phase 1 took place between 19th to 20th of March 2019, at the NFIU headquarters, and has been conducted through a static evaluation of documents, internal procedures, liaisons with other headquarters, structures and agencies, and also of the communications and information system (CIS) which ensures connectivity with NATO, but also with host nation, Romania.
During phases 2 and 3 of the recertification process, the evaluation team will follow up on how NFIU accomplishes its mission entrusted by NATO and how it applies all the procedures evaluated in phase 1 during a real-time deployment of forces in Romania.
In order to evaluate the way in which NFIU conducts its mission and tasks, phases 2 and 3 will take place during SG 19, more specifically during the Tactical Road March (TRM) of 2nd Cavalry Regiment (2CR) of USAREUR, from their base garrison in Vilseck, Germany to Romania, and also during the Joint Forcible Entry (JFE) in Romania of the troops belonging to the 173rd Airborne Brigade (173rd AB) stationed in Vicenza, Italy.
NFIU ROU contributes, along with Romania and the HQ MND-SE, to the enhancement of NATO and Allied capacity to rapidly respond to any challenge.
Together we make the Alliance strong and defensive.
