HQ MND-SE and NFIU ROU supported ”Eagle Overland 18” Exercise
Bucharest, Romania: Headquarters Multinational Division South East (HQ MND-SE) supported “Eagle Overland 18” Exercise, planned and successfully conducted by NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA).
During preparation and execution of Eagle Overland 18 Exercise, from 4th to 9th of July, in close coordination with NRDC-ITA and Host Nation, Romania, HQ MND-SE through the NATO Forces Integration Unit Romania (NFIU ROU) participated in facilitation of a smooth and successful deployment of force elements from North West Italy to Bucharest, Romania. It was the first NATO exercise testing NRF Units capabilities to rapidly deploy in the international environment.
The exercise saw a military convoy of 50 specialists from NRDC-ITA and affiliated units driving around 1800 kilometers from their home base, eastwards through Italy, before passing through Slovenia and Hungary and finally reaching their destination in Romania. The exercise tested procedures which allow NATO forces to move across Alliance countries with minimal restrictions, exercising the ability of NRDC-ITA to deploy elements at short notice.
“Eagle Overland 18” Exercise represented the first opportunity for one of the NATO’s High Readiness Forces to test the capability to deploy at high readiness, in accordance with NATO standards. The exercise provided lessons for the wider Alliance, with focus on procedures required for transiting international boundaries and movements tracking, in close coordination with the authorities of the interested countries.
Following the summit in 2014, the Alliance decided to reform NATO Response Force by strengthening it with the addition of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), a more responsive force with readiness ranging from 48 hours to 7 days.
